Acupuncture
What Is Acupuncture?
It’s a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years. People often think it is just a means of pain relief but acupuncture is used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. In acupuncture the focus is on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.
The Role of Qi (pronounced Chi)
Our health, according to traditional Chinese philosophy, is dependant on the body’s motivating energy – known as Qi – moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin. Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities – Yin and Yang. When these become unbalanced, illness may result. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance.
A number of factors can disturb the flow of Qi such asstates like anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, or poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma.
The principal aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.
Acupuncture is thought to trigger the release of endorphins in the brain. These chemicals affect various body systems, reduce pain and make you feel good.
Who Can Benefit From Acupuncture?
The treatment is safe for all. Acupuncture may help with specific symptoms or conditions including anxiety; arthritis; asthma; back pain; circulatory problems; depression; facial paralysis; fibrositis; high blood pressure; indeterminate aches and pains; infertility; menstrual problems; migraine; morning sickness; rheumatism; sciatica; skin conditions; ulcers.
How Can Trevor Reeves, Acupuncturist, Help Me?
Trevor uses acupuncture to deal with specific conditions or as a preventative measure to strengthen a patient’s constitution. Perhaps you feel unwell without being ill in the Western sense? Acupuncture may help.
Trevor: “Acupuncture can be used alongside conventional medicine to treat both acute and chronic disease. It can bring about more than just relief from a particular condition; acupuncture can also lead to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep as well as an enhanced overall sense of well being.”
As a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) Trevor observes a Code of Safe Practice which lays down stringent standards of hygiene and requires the use of sterile disposable needles. Patients who have been treated by BAcC members are eligible to donate blood through the NHS.
What Does a Consultation Involve?
Trevor gets to know you. He checks 12 pulses along the radial artery on the outside of each of your wrists. He may also check the abdomen and certain acupuncture points for tenderness or pain. He will look at the colour, shape and coating of the tongue and check your face and skin for signs indicating whether any internal organs have problems. Your voice and breath can also provide clues.
When Trevor has chosen the correct acupuncture points he will insert small, very fine needles into them. This should be quick and painless.
The needles are sterilised to prevent any risk of infection and are disposable. As few as one or two or more than 20 needles may be used in treatment and they are usually left in for 15 to 30 minutes.
